Nantes

A ducal castle, a giant mechanical elephant and a green line painted through the streets to guide you to art: Nantes is…

The Pays de la Loire is where the river meets the ocean. Follow the Loire west and the châteaux give way to creative Nantes, the salt marshes of Guérande and long Atlantic beaches. Inland, the Vendée hides quiet villages and one of Europe’s most popular theme parks. This Pays de la Loire travel guide helps you plan it.

Why visit the Pays de la Loire

The region combines the western end of the Loire Valley, a lively regional capital and around 450 km of Atlantic coast, from family resorts to wild islands. It is easy to reach from Paris and far less crowded than the Riviera.

It is also a land of good food and wine: Muscadet, beurre blanc sauce, salt from Guérande and buttery biscuits from Nantes.

Top places to visit in the Pays de la Loire

Angers Castle holds the huge medieval Apocalypse Tapestry. In Saumur, visit the castle, the troglodyte caves carved into the white tufa and the home of the Cadre Noir riding school. Fontevraud Abbey is close by.

The Puy du Fou history theme park is the region’s biggest attraction, surrounded by the hedgerows, lakes and villages of the Vendée bocage.

Guérande and La Baule

The medieval walled town of Guérande overlooks the salt marshes, and La Baule has one of the longest beaches in Europe.

Nantes Atlantique is the main airport. TGV trains reach Nantes from Paris in about two hours and Angers in about an hour and a half. Regional trains link the main towns, but a car is best for the Vendée, the coast and Puy du Fou.
