Barcelona is a city you can live outdoors. Between the Mediterranean and the hills of Collserola, the capital of Catalonia mixes a medieval old town, the extraordinary architecture of Antoni Gaudí and kilometres of city beaches – with a food scene that keeps you out until late.
Why visit Barcelona
Few cities offer so much on foot: Gothic lanes, modernist avenues, markets, museums and the sea, all within a short walk or metro ride. Seven works by Gaudí are listed by UNESCO as World Heritage, from the Sagrada Família to Park Güell.
Top things to do in Barcelona
The Sagrada Família
Gaudí’s unfinished basilica is the symbol of the city. Its stained glass fills the nave with colour – book a timed ticket well ahead.
Park Güell
A hillside park with mosaic terraces, the famous salamander and views over the city to the sea.
Passeig de Gràcia
The elegant avenue of the Eixample is lined with modernist houses, including Casa Batlló and Casa Milà (La Pedrera).
The Gothic Quarter and El Born
Get lost in the narrow streets around the cathedral, then cross to El Born for the Picasso Museum and the church of Santa Maria del Mar.
La Rambla and the Boqueria
Walk down La Rambla and stop at the Boqueria market – go early, before the crowds.
The beaches and Montjuïc
From Barceloneta the beaches stretch north for kilometres. Montjuïc hill has gardens, museums and views over the port.
Best time to visit Barcelona
May, June, September and October are ideal: warm, sunny and great for the beach. July and August are hot and very busy. Winters are mild, and quieter months are perfect for museums.
Getting to and around Barcelona
Barcelona–El Prat airport is linked to the centre by train, metro line 9 and the Aerobús. The metro is fast and easy, and much of the centre is best explored on foot. High-speed trains connect Barcelona-Sants with Madrid and with France.
What to eat in Barcelona
Pa amb tomàquet (bread with tomato), tapas and vermouth, seafood paella and fideuà by the sea, calçots in late winter and crema catalana for dessert.
