Isla Mujeres is Cancún’s laid-back neighbour. The island is only about 7 kilometres long and a few hundred metres wide, and its colourful little town, beaches and relaxed pace make it the classic day trip from Cancún.
Getting there
Ferries leave throughout the day from Puerto Juárez, just north of downtown, and from piers in the Hotel Zone. The crossing takes roughly 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the port.
What to see
Playa Norte
At the northern tip of the island, this beach has shallow, calm, turquoise water – one of the best places in the area for a gentle swim, and for watching the sunset.
The town
Pastel-coloured streets, cafés, craft shops and seafood restaurants, all within walking distance of the ferry pier.
Punta Sur
The rocky southern tip, with cliffs, sea views and a small park – the easternmost point of Mexico is nearby.
Tips
- Rent a golf cart or a bike to explore the island at your own pace.
- Take an early ferry to enjoy Playa Norte before the crowds.
- Check the last ferry time back to Cancún.
