La Lonja is one of the finest Gothic civil buildings in Europe – a cathedral built for merchants. It was built at the end of the 15th century, when Valencia was one of the richest trading cities in the Mediterranean, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

What to see

The Hall of Columns

The Sala de Contratación, where merchants signed their deals, is a forest of twisted columns that rise like palm trees to the vaulted ceiling. It is breathtaking.

The Orange Tree Courtyard

A peaceful walled garden of orange trees separates the main hall from the Consulate of the Sea, the old maritime court, with its magnificent carved wooden ceiling.

The façades

Look up at the gargoyles: monsters, animals and some cheeky figures decorate the outside walls.

Tips

  • Combine with the Central Market across the street, a superb modernist market hall full of local produce.
  • The visit is short: about 45 minutes.
  • Go early to see the Hall of Columns almost empty.
