Between the beaches of the Hotel Zone, Cancún keeps a window onto the Maya world. The Maya Museum, run by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), opened in 2012 and displays archaeological finds mainly from Quintana Roo and the wider region.
What to see
The galleries
Two permanent halls present Maya life, beliefs and trade on the Caribbean coast – sculpture, ceramics, jewellery and burial offerings – and a third hall hosts temporary exhibitions.
San Miguelito
The museum ticket includes the San Miguelito archaeological site in the grounds: a path through the jungle leads to the remains of Postclassic buildings from the centuries before the Spanish conquest, when the area lived from fishing and sea trade.
Tips
- Closed on Mondays; check current hours on the INAH website before you go.
- Bring insect repellent and water for the walk through San Miguelito.
- Combine it with the El Rey ruins and Playa Delfines, a few minutes further south.
