Bourg-la-Reine is a calm, green town just south of Paris. With around 21,000 inhabitants, it sits in the Hauts-de-Seine, on the RER B line, minutes from the centre of the capital. It is a good alternative to staying in Paris itself: quieter, residential and right next to one of the finest parks of Île-de-France.

Why stay in Bourg-la-Reine

You get easy access to Paris – Châtelet, Notre-Dame and the Latin Quarter are a direct RER ride away – with village-like calm in the evening, and the gardens of Sceaux on your doorstep. The RER B also runs to Orly and Charles de Gaulle airports.

Things to see in and around Bourg-la-Reine

The Parc de Sceaux

The Domaine de Sceaux, with its château, grand canal and gardens designed by André Le Nôtre, is right next door. It is perfect for walks and picnics, and famous for its cherry blossom in spring.

Faïence and local heritage

Bourg-la-Reine was known for its faïence (earthenware) manufacture, whose name lives on in the Faïencerie district. Look out for the Villa Hennebique, an early showcase of reinforced concrete, and the church of Saint-Gilles.

Famous residents

The mathematician Évariste Galois was born in Bourg-la-Reine, and the writer Charles Péguy came to live here in 1913.

Paris

Spend your days in the capital: museums, the Seine, Montmartre – then come back to a quieter town at night.

Best time to visit

Spring and early autumn are ideal for Paris and the Parc de Sceaux. Summer is pleasant but busier in the capital.

Bourg-la-Reine RER station is on line B, with direct trains to central Paris and to both main airports. Buses and cycle lanes connect the neighbouring towns.

What to eat

Classic Parisian bistro food, bakeries and markets – and a picnic in the Parc de Sceaux.

Travel tips
