Palenque is the gateway to one of the jewels of the Maya world. The town of about 52,000 people lies on the plain at the foot of the Chiapas hills; a few kilometres away, the ancient city of Palenque rises out of the rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its elegant temples and the tomb of the king Pakal.
Why visit Palenque
For Maya architecture in a jungle setting, the calls of howler monkeys at dawn, swimming under waterfalls and excursions to remote ruins along the Usumacinta river.
