Minas de Riotinto is a small mining town of about 3,700 people in the north of Huelva province. Mining here goes back thousands of years, and in the 19th century the British Rio Tinto Company turned it into one of the largest copper mines in the world. Today its extraordinary landscapes are the heart of the Riotinto Mining Park.

Why visit Minas de Riotinto

For landscapes unlike anywhere else in Europe: open-pit mines in shades of red, ochre and green, and the river Tinto, whose acidic, iron-rich water is a deep red. Scientists study it as an analogue for conditions on Mars.
