Redondela is a town of about 29,000 people on the south shore of the Ría de Vigo. Its skyline is unique: two huge 19th-century railway viaducts cross over the old town. It looks onto the sheltered inlet of San Simón, with its historic island, and is a key stop on the Portuguese Way of the Camino de Santiago.

Why visit Redondela

For a quiet base on the Rías Baixas close to Vigo, calm beaches, seafood – especially cuttlefish – and the atmosphere of a Camino town full of pilgrims.

The viaducts

The Madrid and Pontevedra railway viaducts tower over the streets and are the symbol of the town, called “the town of the viaducts”.

San Simón island

In the inlet facing the town, this small island was once a quarantine station and later a prison. Today it is a cultural site that can be visited on guided boat trips.

The Rande strait

The narrowest point of the ría, crossed by the Rande bridge. In 1702 the Battle of Rande sank a Spanish treasure fleet here, a story that still inspires legends.

Cesantes beach

A calm sandy beach on the inlet, popular with families, with views of San Simón island.

The church of Santiago

A Gothic church in the upper part of the old town, right on the route of the Camino.

The Camino de Santiago

Redondela is where the Coastal and Central routes of the Portuguese Way meet, so in season the old town is full of pilgrims.
