Notre-Dame is the heart of Paris – and it has risen again. Built from the 12th century on the Île de la Cité, the Gothic cathedral was badly damaged by fire in April 2019. After five years of extraordinary restoration work, it reopened in December 2024, its stone and windows brighter than they have been for centuries.
What to see at Notre-Dame
The façade
The western façade, with its three great portals and the Gallery of Kings, is a masterpiece of Gothic sculpture.
The nave and the rose windows
Inside, the cleaned nave glows with light, and the great rose windows of the north and south transepts are breathtaking.
The new spire
The spire, rebuilt to Viollet-le-Duc’s 19th-century design, again rises above the crossing.
The square and the crypt
In front of the cathedral, the parvis marks point zero of French roads. Beneath it, the archaeological crypt reveals the ancient city.
