Beneath the streets of Paris lies a city of the dead. In the late 18th century, the overflowing cemeteries of Paris were emptied and the bones moved into old limestone quarries. Today the Catacombs hold the remains of millions of Parisians, arranged in walls of skulls and bones along dim galleries.
What to expect
- A descent of more than 100 steps into tunnels about 20 metres underground.
- A walk of around 1.5 km through galleries, with the famous inscription *“Arrête ! C’est ici l’empire de la Mort”* at the entrance to the ossuary.
- A cool temperature all year round – bring a light layer.
Tips
- Book a timed ticket online: entry is limited and queues can be long.
- Wear comfortable shoes: the ground can be uneven and damp.
- The visit is not suitable for people with reduced mobility, heart problems or claustrophobia, and may impress young children.
