Versailles is the ultimate royal palace. Louis XIV transformed his father’s hunting lodge into a dazzling seat of power, and for more than a century the court of France lived here. Today the palace, its gardens and the estate of Trianon make the classic day trip from Paris.

What to see at Versailles

The Hall of Mirrors

The Hall of Mirrors, with 357 mirrors facing tall windows on the gardens, is the palace’s showpiece.

The State Apartments

The King’s and Queen’s State Apartments display the splendour of the court of Louis XIV.

The gardens

André Le Nôtre’s gardens stretch to the horizon, with fountains, groves and the Grand Canal. On some days in the warm season, musical fountain shows bring them to life.

The Trianons and the Queen’s Hamlet

Walk or cycle to the Grand Trianon, the Petit Trianon and Marie-Antoinette’s Hamlet, a romantic rustic village.

Getting there

Take the RER C to Versailles Château Rive Gauche, or trains from Saint-Lazare or Montparnasse; the palace is a short walk from the stations.

Tips for your visit

  • Book a timed ticket and arrive early – Versailles is busiest late morning.
  • Avoid Mondays, when the palace is closed.
  • Rent a bike or a rowing boat to explore the gardens.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: the estate is huge.
