Carcassonne is home to the largest medieval fortified city in Europe. On a hill above the River Aude, La Cité rises behind a double ring of walls with 52 towers – a UNESCO World Heritage Site restored in the 19th century by the architect Viollet-le-Duc. Below lies a lively lower town, the Bastide Saint-Louis, and the Canal du Midi.
Why visit Carcassonne
Few places in Europe give such a strong medieval atmosphere. Carcassonne is also the gateway to the Cathar castles of the Aude and to some of Languedoc’s best wine country.
