Bernal is a small town with a giant neighbour. Its 4,000 or so inhabitants live at the foot of the Peña de Bernal, one of the largest rock monoliths in the world, in the semi-desert hills of Querétaro. The town is a Pueblo Mágico, and the Otomí-Chichimeca traditions linked to the Peña are recognised by UNESCO as intangible heritage.

Why visit Bernal

For the unforgettable view of the Peña, a relaxed village atmosphere, local sweets and crafts, and easy access to the wineries and cheese makers of the Querétaro wine route.

Top things to do in Bernal

Walk up the Peña de Bernal

A marked trail climbs from the town towards the base of the rock, with views over the valley. Only climbers with equipment and a guide go to the summit.

The village centre

Cobbled streets lead to the church of San Sebastián and El Castillo, a small 19th-century building with a clock tower. Cafés and terraces look up at the rock.

Sweets, gorditas and wool

Shops sell milk sweets and candied fruit, street stalls make gorditas, and small workshops weave wool blankets and sweaters on traditional looms.

Wineries and cheese

Vineyards and cheese makers around Ezequiel Montes, a few kilometres away, offer tours and tastings.

Day trips from Bernal

Tequisquiapan, with its plazas and thermal pools, is about 35 km away, and Santiago de Querétaro about 60 km.

Best time to visit Bernal

October to May is dry and sunny, with cool mornings. The spring equinox in March draws big crowds, and weekends are busy all year; go on a weekday for a quieter visit.

Getting to Bernal

Querétaro airport is about an hour away. Buses run from Querétaro city, but a car is best to combine Bernal with the wineries and Tequisquiapan.

What to eat in Bernal

Gorditas filled with beans, cheese or cactus, barbacoa on weekends, local cheeses, wines and the town’s traditional sweets.
