Where to stay in Barcelona: the best areas for every traveller

Choosing where to stay in Barcelona is mostly about one question: old streets or wide avenues? The city is compact and the metro is easy, but each neighbourhood has its own mood – medieval lanes, modernist boulevards, village squares or the sea.

The quick answer

  • First trip: the Eixample, around Passeig de Gràcia, or the Gothic Quarter.
  • Romantic break: El Born or the Gothic Quarter.
  • Families: the Eixample or the beach areas of Barceloneta and the Vila Olímpica.
  • Local life and a younger vibe: Gràcia.

The Gothic Quarter

The Barri Gòtic is the heart of the old city: narrow lanes, the cathedral and tiny squares. Everything is on foot, but streets can be noisy at night and rooms in historic buildings are often small.

El Born

Next door, El Born mixes medieval streets, the Picasso Museum, Santa Maria del Mar and many of the city’s best bars. It is atmospheric and romantic, and a short walk from the Ciutadella park and the sea.

The Eixample

The Eixample is the grid of elegant 19th-century blocks around Passeig de Gràcia, with Casa Batlló and Casa Milà. It has the widest choice of hotels, quieter streets at night and excellent metro links – the most practical base for most visitors.

Gràcia

North of the Eixample, Gràcia feels like a village of small squares, independent shops and terraces. It is close to Park Güell and suits travellers who want to live like locals.

Barceloneta and the Vila Olímpica

For the sea, choose Barceloneta, the old fishermen’s quarter, or the Vila Olímpica, built for the 1992 Olympics, with wide promenades and big hotels with pools. You will take the metro to the Sagrada Família, but children will love it.

Tips for choosing a hotel

  • Light sleepers should avoid rooms facing La Rambla and the busiest squares.
  • A pool is a real plus from June to September; many are on rooftops.
  • Check the metro station nearest your hotel: lines 2, 3 and 4 serve most sights.

Is it better to stay near the beach in Barcelona?

The Barceloneta and the Vila Olímpica are great for a beach holiday, especially with children, but you will take the metro to reach Gaudí’s buildings.
