When to visit Seville: the best time of year, season by season

Seville is one of the sunniest and hottest cities in Europe. That makes winter a pleasure and summer a challenge. Spring is the classic season – beautiful, festive and busy. Here is what each time of year brings.

Spring (March to May)

The most beautiful season. In March and April the streets smell of azahar, the blossom of thousands of orange trees. Holy Week (Semana Santa) fills the old town with processions of religious brotherhoods carrying great floats day and night – moving, crowded and unforgettable. About two weeks later comes the April Fair (Feria de Abril): a week of lanterns, flamenco dresses, sevillanas, horses and casetas, the marquees where Sevillanos eat, drink and dance. Many casetas are private, but there are public ones too. Book early for both weeks.

Summer (June to August)

June is still pleasant in the mornings, and the city celebrates Corpus Christi with a procession. July and August are fiercely hot, with afternoons often above 40 °C. Locals leave for the coast and the city slows down. If you come, sightsee early, rest at midday and enjoy the warm nights by the river. In late July, Triana celebrates its neighbourhood fiesta, the Velá de Santa Ana.

Autumn (September to November)

September is still hot, but in even-numbered years it brings the Bienal de Flamenco, one of the great flamenco festivals. October and November are excellent: warm days, soft light and calmer streets – ideal for the Real Alcázar gardens and long walks along the river.

Winter (December to February)

Mild and often sunny, with cool nights. At Christmas the streets are lit up and a fair of nativity figures sets up near the Cathedral. On 5 January the Three Kings parade fills the centre with floats and sweets. Winter is the quietest season: perfect for unhurried visits and a sunny afternoon in the Plaza de España.
