Carpentras is the historic capital of the Comtat Venaissin, the land once ruled by the popes of Avignon. Set in the plain at the foot of Mont Ventoux, it is known for its huge Friday market, its winter truffle market, a unique Jewish heritage and its colourful sweets, the berlingots.

Why visit Carpentras

Carpentras is an authentic Provençal town, less touristy than Avignon or the Luberon, with superb produce, rich history and easy access to the Ventoux, the Dentelles de Montmirail and the wine villages.

Top things to do in Carpentras

The Friday market

Every Friday morning, one of the largest markets in Provence fills the streets with fruit, vegetables, cheese, olives and lavender. From November to March, a truffle market is held too.

The synagogue

The Synagogue of Carpentras, rebuilt in 1741 on the site of a 14th-century synagogue, is the oldest synagogue still in use in France, with a richly decorated prayer hall.

The cathedral and the Roman arch

The Gothic Cathedral of Saint-Siffrein stands next to a Roman triumphal arch, a reminder of the town’s ancient past.

The Porte d’Orange and the Hôtel-Dieu

The Porte d’Orange is the last surviving gate of the 14th-century walls. The majestic 18th-century Hôtel-Dieu now houses the Inguimbertine library and museum.

Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles

The Mont Ventoux, the “Giant of Provence”, is a legend of the Tour de France. The jagged Dentelles de Montmirail and wine villages such as Gigondas and Beaumes-de-Venise are nearby.

Best time to visit

April to October is ideal; summer is hot. Come between November and March for truffles.
