Three days in Cancún are enough for sea, sand and a taste of the Maya world. This plan mixes beach time with culture and a day on an island.

Day 1: Maya history and Playa Delfines

  • Morning: visit the Maya Museum and walk through the San Miguelito site in its grounds (closed on Mondays).
  • Late morning: explore the El Rey ruins and their iguanas before the heat peaks.
  • Afternoon: relax at Playa Delfines and take the classic photo at the Cancún sign – swim only when the flags allow.
  • Evening: sunset over the Nichupté Lagoon and dinner in the Hotel Zone.

Day 2: Isla Mujeres

  • Morning: take an early ferry to Isla Mujeres and swim in the calm water of Playa Norte.
  • Afternoon: rent a golf cart and drive to Punta Sur for the cliffs and sea views.
  • Evening: dinner in the island’s colourful town, then the ferry back – check the last departure.

Day 3: underwater and downtown

  • Morning: snorkel or dive at the underwater museum (MUSA) – calm mornings give the clearest water.
  • Afternoon: head downtown: the Parque de las Palapas, the crafts of Mercado 28 and a long lunch of tacos or cochinita pibil.
  • Evening: back to the Hotel Zone for a last walk on the beach.

Tips

  • Use reef-safe sunscreen for the reefs and MUSA.
  • Carry some cash in pesos for buses, markets and tips.
  • Check the season: hurricane risk is highest from August to October.

Frequently asked questions

Are 3 days enough for Cancún?

Yes, for the beaches, the Maya sites in the Hotel Zone and Isla Mujeres. Add a fourth day for Chichén Itzá, Tulum or the cenotes.

Can I visit Chichén Itzá from Cancún?

Yes, but it is a long day: the site is about two and a half to three hours away by road, so plan an early start.

How do I get around Cancún?

Buses run along Boulevard Kukulcán between the Hotel Zone and downtown all day; taxis are easy to find, and ferries leave for Isla Mujeres from Puerto Juárez and the Hotel Zone.
