In Cancún, the question is not only which hotel, but which beach. Most hotels stand along the Hotel Zone, a 7-shaped strip of sand between the Caribbean and the Nichupté Lagoon, and each stretch has a different character.

The quick answer

  • First trip: Punta Cancún.
  • Romantic break: the southern Hotel Zone or Punta Nizuc.
  • Families: Punta Cancún or a big resort with a kids’ club.
  • Local life and value: downtown Cancún.

Punta Cancún

The corner of the “7”, around kilometre 9: calmer north-facing beaches, shopping centres, restaurants and the nightlife district. Classic hotels such as the Coral Beach and the Hyatt Ziva are here.

The southern Hotel Zone

From kilometre 10 to 20, long beaches face the open Caribbean – beautiful, but with stronger waves. Here you find resorts like the Kempinski, Le Blanc and Paradisus, plus the Maya Museum, the El Rey ruins and Playa Delfines.

Punta Nizuc

The secluded southern tip, closest to the airport, with resorts such as NIZUC and Club Med. Peaceful, but far from downtown.

Puerto Cancún

A newer area of marina, golf course and residential towers between downtown and the Hotel Zone, with the boutique SLS Cancún.

Downtown (El Centro)

Not on the beach, but full of local life, markets and taquerías, with good-value hotels and buses to the beaches.

South of the city and Isla Mujeres

Big resorts such as Moon Palace lie south of Cancún near the airport, and Isla Mujeres has small hotels for a quieter island stay.

Tips for choosing a hotel

  • Check the hotel’s beach: north-facing (calmer) or east-facing (open sea).
  • All-inclusive or not? Compare what is included with how often you plan to eat out.
  • Avoid peak hurricane months (August–October) if you want certainty.
