La Libertad lies on Peru’s north coast, about 560 km north of Lima. Its capital, Trujillo, is a colonial city of colourful mansions, and around it stand some of the most important archaeological sites in South America, a few minutes from beaches where fishermen still ride reed boats.
Why visit La Libertad
For ancient history without the crowds of Cusco: the Chimú city of Chan Chan and the great Moche temples are among the most impressive sites in Peru. Add sunshine for most of the year, excellent seafood and world-famous surf, and La Libertad is the perfect northern extension to a Peru trip.
